| If soy is such a miraculous food product, why has it only been recently been recognized as such? The answer lies in our increasingly sophisticated biological and ecological research. Advances in studying DNA and genetics have allowed us to look deep within the bean, to see what makes it tick... A better understanding of soy's genetic makeup has also allowed some scientists to try and develop a better bean, through manipulation; a practice which has raised some serious issues amongst ecologists, and the farming community alike. | |||
Our world's increasing demand for food calls for drastic measures to be implemented, in some cases, this means the genetic manipulation of plants in order to produce bigger tomatoes, as well as biologically enhanced corn and soy beans. While we only mean to report what is going on, and not take any sides, it's fair to say the practice has its pros and cons, but many feel more research is needed before we can ingest foods made from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). This does not mean the soy products you buy at the supermarket, and your health food store are made from GMOs; all you need to do is read the package, and you'll probably see a warning label, or a certification that the product is free of GMOs. All in all, soy's health benefits are incredible, as we have mentioned earlier, soy contains natural plant phytoestrogen that replicates female estrogen, and has proven to be a great help to post menopausal women. Studies have shown that Asian women, who consume more soy products from an early age, show less incidence of breast cancer, and in some cases, do not undergo the same post menopausal symptoms as western women.
Some people are allergic to soy, as some may be allergic to nuts, or shellfish, so if you are prone to food allergies and you have never tried soy, you may want to go through allergy testing first. But it most cases, soy is an excellent substitute for food you may be allergic too, such as lactose rich foods and milk, and it is also easier to digest than corn or even rice.
