Soy Product - That's Made of Soy?

Perhaps one of the most unusual uses for soy is in making non-food items...  While it is to be expected that soy has properties which make it useful as a beauty product, few people know that you can also make candles out of it.  The main advantage of soy candles is that they do not leave sooty residue as they burn.  Soy is also used in the making of breast implants, as a safer alternative silicon gel, which can cause irreparable damage in the event of a leak.  While we cannot offer any tips on breast implants, we can however enlighten you in the fabrication of soy wax candles.

One of the main advantages in using soy is that it is a non-toxic, bio-degradable product.  Imagine having "edible" candles on your birthday cake, or knowing that if your kids are chewing their crayons, they're non-toxic...  We've even heard of ski wax being made with soy, so the sky is the limit.

Making your own soy "container-type" candles

First, you need wax, now there are many types of soy wax blends available, which appears confusing at first, but our research has shown that many soy wax candle makers out there use ecowax; it is a one pour blend that is easier to manage for beginners and pro alike.

  • First off, you'll need to find a suitable container.  we suggest you use tin, glass, or cured ceramic.
  • We recommend using square braided wick, as it is sturdier than other kinds.
  • If you want to add color to your candle, you can use special dye chips, which can be mixed together to a desired shade, or you may also use liquid dye.  Both are available from a variety of suppliers, so happy hunting.
  • Fragrance is also an option that is left to your own designs, you may add  natural essences, spices, or perfumes; bear in mind that some oil based fragrances do not mix well with the wax. dropping the fragrance into the wax just before pouring it will make for stronger scented candles.
  • Melt your wax at around 140° if you are planning on leaving it color and fragrance free.  If you plan on adding dye or fragrance, you will have to melt it at around 175°. We recommend you melt your wax in a metal container resting on a thick aluminum plate on your stove's element.
  • Before pouring the wax in your destination container, you'll have to make sure the wick is properly centered.  take a small diameter stick, or a pencil to which you can tie your wick and lay it over the opening of your container, making sure the wick is hanging straight down the center. use a wick holder at the bottom of your container to make sure it remains centered while you pour the wax.
  • pour your wax into the container slowly and evenly, and let stand until it cools.

This information only covers the basics of candle making, we suggest you also look around for discussion groups, forums, and other websites.
